President Hansen Advocates for Workers in the New Global Economy

UFCW International President Joe Hansen, in his capacity as President of Union Network International (UNI) Global Union, was in Washington last week with UNI General Secretary Phillip Jennings to forcefully call on the world’s governments and the International Financial Institutions (IFI) attending the G-20 Summit to put worker assistance at the heart of a coordinated stimulus policy. The UNI heads called on the world’s leaders to rebuild the global economy’s financial architecture with an emphasis on comprehensive regulation and supervision, and with a prominent seat at the table for unions and workers.

Hansen and Jennings participated in a series of meetings with IFI leaders and individual governments on Friday. The UNI leaders said that any plan that bails out banks but leaves workers without a lifejacket is unacceptable.

UNI will continue to push the G-20 to respond to the global crisis in a way that puts working people first. UNI is the global union for skills and services with 20 million members in 900 unions.
